Information You’ll Need
- Social Security numbers for all household members applying for coverage
- Employer and income information for all household members
- Policy numbers for any current health coverage
- Recent federal income tax return (for estimating income)
Step-by-Step Application Process
- Create an account: Go to Healthcare.gov (or your state exchange) and create a login.
- Start an application: Click “Apply for Coverage” and complete your household information.
- Enter income: Provide your estimated annual household income for the coming year.
- Review eligibility: The system will tell you if you qualify for Medicaid, CHIP, or Marketplace subsidies.
- Compare plans: Browse plans in your area filtered by premium, deductible, and network.
- Enroll: Select your plan and complete enrollment. You’ll then pay your first premium directly to the insurer.
Coverage Start Dates
- Enroll by December 15: Coverage starts January 1
- Enroll by January 15: Coverage starts February 1
- SEP enrollment: Usually starts the 1st of the month following your SEP event
