When Can You Switch Medicare Advantage Plans?
- Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7. This is the primary window to switch. New plan begins January 1.
- Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP): January 1 – March 31. Switch once during this period. New coverage begins the 1st of the next month.
- Special Enrollment Periods: Moving, losing coverage, qualifying for Extra Help, or other qualifying events.
Step-by-Step Switching Process
- Compare plans: During AEP, use Medicare Plan Finder or a licensed broker to compare your current plan vs alternatives.
- Verify your doctors and drugs: Confirm in-network status and formulary coverage for the new plan.
- Enroll in the new plan: Signing up for the new plan automatically disenrolls you from the old one — you don’t need to formally cancel.
- Confirm the switch: You’ll receive an enrollment confirmation and new ID card within 2–4 weeks.
