Medicare Advantage Enrollment Periods
- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): Your first chance to enroll. Starts 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and extends 3 months after. 7 months total. Enroll in both Medicare Parts A & B, then choose your plan.
- Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7 each year. You can switch plans, join a new MA plan, or return to Original Medicare. New coverage begins January 1.
- Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP): January 1 – March 31. If you’re already in an MA plan, you may switch to a different MA plan or return to Original Medicare. Can only be used once.
- Special Enrollment Periods: Triggered by qualifying events such as moving out of your plan’s service area, losing other coverage, or qualifying for low-income subsidies.
How to Enroll in Medicare Advantage
- Confirm you’re enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B
- Find plans in your county using medicare.gov/plan-compare or a licensed broker
- Verify your doctors and medications are covered
- Enroll online, by phone, or through a licensed agent (free to use)
- Pay no enrollment fee — the plan is funded by Medicare and your monthly premium
